How to Build the Ultimate Adventure Bike

How to Build the Ultimate Adventure Bike

Adventure travel and ultra-distance cycling demand more from a bike. Whether you’re crossing continents, racing ultra-endurance events, or disappearing into remote backcountry for weeks at a time, your bike becomes your most critical piece of equipment.

Comfort, durability, and reliability matter far more than marginal gains in weight or aerodynamics, which is where a titanium frame truly excels. Known for its ride comfort, corrosion resistance, and ability to dampen rough terrain, a titanium adventure bike like the Reilly Gradient or Reflex is the perfect companion for long-distance adventures.

Why Titanium Is Ideal for Adventure and Ultra-Distance Bikes

Titanium offers a rare balance of strength, flexibility, and longevity. It resists corrosion, shrugs off poor weather, and delivers a smooth ride over long days in the saddle. For riders tackling rough roads, mixed terrain, and unpredictable conditions, titanium provides confidence that other materials struggle to match.

How Reilly Creates Bespoke Titanium Bikes for Adventurers

Reilly Titanium has extensive experience building bespoke titanium bikes for riders taking on extraordinary challenges.

When Duncan Covey approached Reilly ahead of his round-the-world cycling journey, the team designed a custom Reilly Gradient. The bike survived 18 months and over 40,000km across every type of terrain imaginable.

More recently, 5ft rider Carolina took on Across Andes, an unsupported ultra-gravel race in Chile. Struggling to find a bike that fit her height while carrying sufficient luggage, Reilly reworked an XXS Gradient to create a perfectly balanced solution.

Bespoke Titanium Bikes for Any Adventure

Whatever your goal, from bikepacking expeditions to ultra-distance racing, Reilly can create a bespoke titanium bike tailored to your adventure. We take immense pride and care in helping customers modify and tailor every aspect of the build towards their goals. For example, Carolina's bike used to venture the Andes featured custom Chilean themed REILLY decals and a set of 150mm cranks!

The Reilly Gradient: A Classic Titanium Adventure Bike

The Reilly Gradient is a purpose-built titanium adventure bike, designed to carry heavy loads and be easily maintainable over long distances. Some of the main attractions of the Gradient include:

  • Relaxed frame geometry, with a headtube extender and flat bars for an upright and comfortable ride
  • External cable routing for easier maintenance in remote locations
  • Full mounts for mudguards and pannier racks
  • Tubeless tyres run at lower pressures for added comfort
  • Suspension stem to reduce fatigue over long days

Gearing is critical for loaded adventure riding. This build uses Shimano Cues 2x gearing with a 46/32 chainset and an 11–45 cassette for dependable climbing.

Strong, hand-built wheels are essential for rough terrain. The Parcours Alta wheelset offers durability and versatility, paired with Restrap bikepacking luggage for a fully expedition-ready setup.

The Reilly Reflex: Titanium for Ultra-Distance Racing

With its aerodynamic design and increased tyre clearance, the Reilly Reflex is a more race-focused titanium gravel bike, often chosen for fast ultra-distance events and FKTs.

This build features Shimano GRX 717 Di2 1x electronic shifting, with a 42t chainring and a wide-range 10–51 cassette.

The Parcours FKT wheelset is paired with the innovative Gravaa adjustable tyre pressure system, allowing riders to adjust tyre pressure on the fly via a head unit or smartphone.

Sporting a set of Panaracer GravelKing X1 50mm tyres, Exposure lights, A Restrap bikepacking kit, and Brick Lane Bikes bar tape help complete a build that seamlessly blends comfort and looks.
